It took me longer then I had originally intended to finish reading this one but the story is is just so rich with history as well as has these interesting characters all the way through I can’t help but keep reading。

What made this great is the way that I FELT it。 The characters struggle。 The Christians of that time for instance struggle with the reality around them, as real life。 They had some weird theological adaptations that appeared after the imperialization of Christianity, and I was glad to see that included。 I'm a pastor and a Christian, and this period got weird for Christianity, and I really felt that I was there, feeling what they would have felt。 The girl's agony over understanding the slaughter What made this great is the way that I FELT it。 The characters struggle。 The Christians of that time for instance struggle with the reality around them, as real life。 They had some weird theological adaptations that appeared after the imperialization of Christianity, and I was glad to see that included。 I'm a pastor and a Christian, and this period got weird for Christianity, and I really felt that I was there, feeling what they would have felt。 The girl's agony over understanding the slaughter was a perfect example。 Although Christianity is neither really DEFENDED or EXPLAINED in this book, the historical reality of it is given color。 The author has a genuine desire to show reality, and it really works。 Showing that there really are evil people, that different cultures have different indoctrinations than others, that Christ was unfortunately made into a political figure for a nation (and thereby it's defeat brought shame on Christ and muddied the message of the cross, thereby making it even harder for others to accept), was all what made this not a source of encouragement for one belief over another but rather of inner reflection。The Vikings must have felt that Thor and the Norse gods were greater than Christ, and they who held no morals save glory in battle must have been confused by the "weakness" of Christ。 What did the Christian feel? What of the devout ones? Did they serve Christ as a good-luck charm to keep them from harm, or did they trust past their poor fortunes on this earth? For a wealthy American culture that thinks the smallest things are of complete importance (like a the loss of Trump), there is a disconnect even from modern day third world Christians。 The health and wealth name it and claim it theology is a far cry from the medieval Christian world that faced the Viking invasion。 For better or for worse, it was what it was, and this shows a glimpse into that world。 。。。more

3。5 stars Not for the faint of heart! It’s gruesome and gritty - I love it。 The pacing is quite slow, but for an epic saga that works fine (like GOT)。 The art is absolutely stunning and so detailed。 But something is missing for me, I’m not sure what。 I will keep reading for sure, but it’s not 5/5 yet, but I hope it will get there。

The anime is probably the most faithful adaptation I've ever experienced。 It's pretty much a shot for shot version of the manga。 This has honestly skyrocketed to one of my all time favorite stories, no matter the medium。 I can't wait to keep reading! I'm not very sold on this series。 It feels like nothing particularly major happened across those 400 pages。 I'm going to give the next book a go and if it doesn't grab me, then I'm just moving on。 Overall, a 2。5/5。 I'm not very sold on this series。 It feels like nothing particularly major happened across those 400 pages。 I'm going to give the next book a go and if it doesn't grab me, then I'm just moving on。 Overall, a 2。5/5。 。。。more

i really like how this series does not shy away from the horrors of war (like it shows the gore, the assaults, etc。)。 unless the series is non-fiction, i haven't read a book where it shows this side of war。 i really like how this series does not shy away from the horrors of war (like it shows the gore, the assaults, etc。)。 unless the series is non-fiction, i haven't read a book where it shows this side of war。 。。。more

I like to read horror manga, but in this one, I feel like they kill people just for the sake of killing。 I thought it was unnecessary to kill the villagers after taking their food。 Thorfin always saying he's not a part of his band but he keeps doing his dirty work。 His father would be disappointed。 I like to read horror manga, but in this one, I feel like they kill people just for the sake of killing。 I thought it was unnecessary to kill the villagers after taking their food。 Thorfin always saying he's not a part of his band but he keeps doing his dirty work。 His father would be disappointed。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This second volume of Vinland Saga is great。 All of the benefits of the first volume are still there。 I won’t comment on everything, but the standout stuff from this volume is the commentary on religion。 I’m not sure the author quite gets it, but it’s the best I have ever seen come out of a mainstream Japanese source。 The dialogues between the priest Willibald and the Vikings about love and Christianity are great。 What’s less great is the idea that Christians view God as being a distant reality。 This second volume of Vinland Saga is great。 All of the benefits of the first volume are still there。 I won’t comment on everything, but the standout stuff from this volume is the commentary on religion。 I’m not sure the author quite gets it, but it’s the best I have ever seen come out of a mainstream Japanese source。 The dialogues between the priest Willibald and the Vikings about love and Christianity are great。 What’s less great is the idea that Christians view God as being a distant reality。 But hey I’ll take it。 Canute is probably the most annoying character in this series I don’t like him pre-transformation in this volume, just as I don’t like him afterwards。 We’ll see how it all shapes up in the manga。 Hopefully with more depth than the anime。 。。。more

This book slaps。 All of the characters are more developed and the the new additions are great。 Definitely worth reading!

A good continuation of the first omnibus。 Story really changes gears and has some historically relevant sections in regards to the Danish/English war。 Art remains top notch and I am going to have to buy the next book to see where the story is going。

I liked this volume as much as the first one。 The history and the characters were equally captivating。 The Vikings have always been portrayed as brutal warriors and the manga does not hold back on showing us what that might have looked like。 Some scenes were tragic and hard to read but that also made the historical background seem more realistic。 We also learn more about certain characters which makes me excited for the following volumes。

I think I might just be addicted to this series now that I've experienced it!This second book has flown by and, whilst not as emotional as the first, it retains the excitement and ramps up the action considerably。 Basing itself on Britain's green and pleasant hills, but detailing the Vikings chaos, plotting and ruthlessness, is a rich bed from which to tell tales and it does it incredibly well。 The artwork is still amazing and the characters are growing increasingly complex as the chapters progr I think I might just be addicted to this series now that I've experienced it!This second book has flown by and, whilst not as emotional as the first, it retains the excitement and ramps up the action considerably。 Basing itself on Britain's green and pleasant hills, but detailing the Vikings chaos, plotting and ruthlessness, is a rich bed from which to tell tales and it does it incredibly well。 The artwork is still amazing and the characters are growing increasingly complex as the chapters progress。Onward to book 3! 。。。more

Actual rating: Vinland Saga finds more stable footing in this volume, which makes this an easier 4。5/5, but there still are elements which keep me from saying it's closer to a 5 than a 4。 However, the first and last chapters in particular are。。。 phenomenal (and because of them, I seriously considered giving the volume a full 5 stars。。。)。 Goodreads, we need half-stars! Much stronger read than book 1 was。 The focus on Askeladd and the politics he is embroiled in and his history are awesome and something I cannot wait to hear more of。 Also, Thorkell is a great new addition, and one I want to know more about。 Also, the whole discussion of faith and the nature of paganism abutting old Christianity is great and remarkably well handled。 The scenes with the friar and the two brothers discussing divine love is some great a nuanced writing I'm excited to see expand as Much stronger read than book 1 was。 The focus on Askeladd and the politics he is embroiled in and his history are awesome and something I cannot wait to hear more of。 Also, Thorkell is a great new addition, and one I want to know more about。 Also, the whole discussion of faith and the nature of paganism abutting old Christianity is great and remarkably well handled。 The scenes with the friar and the two brothers discussing divine love is some great a nuanced writing I'm excited to see expand as the work continues。 。。。more

Still Fantastic Though not as gripping as the first volume, it was still a delight to watch。 For those unaware, I have watched the anime and am now rereading/watching the manga。 I have a lot to say about how much I love this story, but I'll keep it focused on why I wasn't overly fond of the second half。 It's good。 I'm just pointing out how what happens in the later half of this volume is not as enticing as the first half。 The first half has tension, drama and lots of action。 The second half is t Still Fantastic Though not as gripping as the first volume, it was still a delight to watch。 For those unaware, I have watched the anime and am now rereading/watching the manga。 I have a lot to say about how much I love this story, but I'll keep it focused on why I wasn't overly fond of the second half。 It's good。 I'm just pointing out how what happens in the later half of this volume is not as enticing as the first half。 The first half has tension, drama and lots of action。 The second half is taking a breath and decompressing and is more focused on geography and politics。 Not necessarily a bad thing at all。 But being this is the second time I've experience the story, it was less captivating。 。。。more
